We Never Stopped Working on Oil Furnaces and Boilers

Plenty of contractors have quietly moved on from oil and hydronic heat. We have not. A large share of the homes around Laconia, Gilford, Belmont and Sanbornton still run on an oil-fired furnace or a boiler feeding baseboard and radiators, and those systems deserve technicians who actually know them.

Our roots are in commercial mechanical work, which means combustion, controls and hydronics are not a side specialty for us. They are the core of what our people were trained on.

  • Service, repair and replacement for oil and gas heating
  • All makes and models, including older systems other companies decline
  • Straightforward, written pricing before any work begins

what usually goes wrong

The No-Heat Calls We Take Most Often

Oil and hydronic systems tend to fail in recognizable ways. Knowing which one you are looking at helps us arrive with the right part on the truck.

The Burner Will Not Fire

The system hums, clicks, or locks out on the reset button and nothing happens. Common causes include a clogged nozzle or fuel filter, worn ignition electrodes, a failed cad cell, or air in the fuel line after a tank has run low.

No Heat or No Hot Water From the Boiler

A boiler that will not build temperature, or that heats the house but not the domestic hot water, usually points at a circulator, a zone valve, an aquastat, or a control problem rather than the boiler itself.

Cold Rooms and Cold Baseboard

One zone stays cold while the rest of the house is fine. That is typically air trapped in the loop, a stuck zone valve, or a circulator that is no longer moving water through that run.

equipment we work on

Furnaces, Boilers and Everything Attached to Them

A heating call is rarely just about the appliance. Most of what fails on a hydronic system is the network of pumps, valves, and controls around the boiler, and diagnosing that correctly is the difference between a repair and a replacement quote you did not need.

If your system is older than the technician looking at it, that is fine. We still carry parts and know-how for equipment that has been in a Lakes Region basement for decades.

Systems We Service and Install
  • Oil-fired warm air furnaces
  • Oil-fired and gas-fired boilers
  • Hot water baseboard and radiator (hydronic) systems
  • Circulator pumps, zone valves and manifolds
  • Aquastats, thermostats and system controls
  • Combustion testing and efficiency adjustment

annual cleaning is not optional on oil

Oil Systems Need a Cleaning Every Single Year

This is the one real difference between owning oil heat and owning gas. Oil combustion leaves soot behind, and soot on a heat exchanger acts like insulation — your system burns more fuel to deliver less heat, and eventually shuts down on a safety.

A yearly cleaning before the heating season is the cheapest thing you will do for that system all year. Book it in early fall, before the first cold snap fills the schedule.

  • Replace the nozzle, oil filter and fuel line strainer
  • Clean the heat exchanger, flue passages and combustion chamber
  • Inspect and set ignition electrodes
  • Run a combustion and efficiency test with instruments, not by eye
  • Check safety controls, limits and the barometric damper

An Honest Answer, Not a Reflex Sales Pitch

Most of the oil and boiler calls we take end in a repair, because that is genuinely the right answer. But there is a point where you are paying to keep a system alive that is costing you more in fuel every winter than the payment on a new one would.

When that point arrives, we walk you through every option that fits the house — a new high-efficiency system, or a cold-climate heat pump if the building suits it. You get the comparison, and you make the call.

Signs It May Be Time
  • The system is well past 15 to 20 years old
  • Repairs are becoming an annual event rather than a rare one
  • Fuel use keeps climbing while comfort keeps dropping
  • Parts are getting hard to source for the model
  • A cracked heat exchanger or section has been identified

frequently asked questions

Oil Heat and Boiler Questions From Lakes Region Homeowners

My oil burner keeps locking out on the reset button. What is wrong?

Repeated lockouts usually mean the burner is trying to fire and failing, most often from a clogged nozzle or fuel filter, worn electrodes, or air in the line after the tank ran low. Pressing reset more than once is not recommended, because each attempt can pump unburned oil into the combustion chamber. Call us instead, and we will diagnose it properly.

What is the difference between a furnace and a boiler?

A furnace heats air and blows it through ducts to vents. A boiler heats water and circulates it through baseboard, radiators or radiant tubing. Many Lakes Region homes are boiler-and-baseboard, which is why a contractor who only knows forced air is only half useful here.

How often does an oil system need to be cleaned?

Every year, without exception. Oil combustion leaves soot on the heat exchanger, and that soot insulates the very surface that is supposed to transfer heat. An annual cleaning before the heating season protects your efficiency and your safety controls.

Part of my house is cold, but the boiler is running. Why?

That is almost always a zone problem rather than a boiler problem — air trapped in the loop, a zone valve that is not opening, or a circulator that has stopped moving water through that run. All three are common, and all three are repairable.

Should I replace my oil system with a heat pump?

Sometimes, and sometimes not. It depends on the house, the insulation, your electrical service, and what you are paying for fuel. We will lay out the comparison honestly, including staying with oil or moving to a high-efficiency system, and let you decide.
