Do not call us first. Get everyone out of the building immediately. Do not use light switches, appliances, or phones inside. Once you are outside and a safe distance away, call 911 and your gas utility. Call us after you are safe, and the situation has been cleared — we will take it from there.

When It Is a Real Emergency

In a Lakes Region winter, a heating failure is not just discomfort — it is a house with pipes at risk. These are the situations where calling at 2 am is the right call.

No Heat in Freezing Weather

The house is dropping, and the outside temperature is below freezing. Once indoor temperatures fall far enough, pipes in exterior walls, crawlspaces, and unheated basements start to be at risk. This is the most common overnight call we take.

Burning Smells or Unusual Noises

An electrical or burning odor, a loud grinding or screeching, or a system that is repeatedly tripping its breaker. Shut the system down at the thermostat, leave it off, and call. Running it to see whether the noise stops usually makes the repair bigger.

Water Leaking From the System

Water pooling around a boiler, furnace, or indoor air handler can damage floors, ceilings, and electrical components fast. In summer, a clogged condensate line can put water into a finished basement overnight.

an honest triage

Emergency, or Can It Wait Until Morning?

We would rather you called, and it turned out to be nothing, than sat up all night worrying. But it is a fair question, and here is how we think about it.

Call Us Now

These do not improve by waiting.

  • No heat with outdoor temperatures at or below freezing
  • Anyone in the home who is elderly, very young, or medically vulnerable
  • Water actively leaking from or pooling under the equipment
  • Burning or electrical smells, or a system tripping its breaker repeatedly
  • No cooling during a heat advisory, especially with vulnerable occupants
This Can Usually Wait

Call during business hours and save the after-hours trip.

  • One room is uncomfortable, but the rest of the house is fine
  • The system runs but seems less efficient than it used to
  • A thermostat you would like reprogrammed or replaced
  • A routine tune-up, filter change or maintenance visit
  • Getting a quote on replacing aging equipment

A Few Safe Things Worth Checking

None of this is repair work, and none of it requires opening equipment. Sometimes one of these solves it outright, and when it does not, knowing you already checked helps our technician get to the cause faster.

  • Confirm the thermostat is set to heat or cool and the batteries are good
  • Check that the service switch beside the furnace or boiler is on
  • Check the breaker panel for a tripped breaker
  • If you heat with oil or propane, check the tank level
  • In a freeze, let faucets drip and open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls

One thing not to do: if an oil burner has locked out, avoid pressing the reset button more than once. Each attempt can pump unburned oil into the combustion chamber and turn a small repair into a larger one.

2

You Get an Estimate

Our dispatcher gives you a real-time arrival window, so you know whether to stay up or get some sleep.

3

A Stocked Truck Arrives

Our vans carry a large inventory of motors, controls, and common failure parts, which is how 90% of repairs finish on the first visit.

frequently asked questions

Emergency Service Questions

Are you really available 24 hours a day?

Yes. We provide 24/7 emergency repair across the Lakes Region, and our live answering service means you speak with a real person rather than leaving a message.

How quickly can someone get to my house?

With 32 vans on the road and our office in Gilford, we can often arrive within one to two hours for critical emergencies in Gilford and Laconia. Travel times run longer for outlying towns and during severe weather. Our dispatcher gives you a real-time estimate when you call, rather than a vague window.

What should I do if I smell gas or my CO alarm goes off?

Get everyone out of the building immediately, without using light switches, appliances, or phones inside. From a safe distance outside, call 911 and your gas utility. Those calls come before ours — call us once you are safe and the situation has been cleared.

Will I pay more for a repair in the middle of the night?

You will always see a clear quote before any repair begins, so you can decide with the number in front of you rather than finding out afterward. Ask the dispatcher about after-hours rates when you call, and you will know before we roll.

My heat is out, but it is not that cold yet. Should I still call?

If temperatures are heading toward freezing overnight, call. A house cooling down slowly on a mild evening is a different situation from one dropping toward pipe-freezing territory, and waiting until morning is often fine. When you are unsure, call and ask — that costs you nothing.

Do you service my town after hours?

We provide emergency service across our full service area, from Gilford and Laconia out to Meredith, Center Harbor, Belmont, Sanbornton, Tilton, Northfield, Franklin, Moultonborough and Alton.
